RealFi Office Hours #7

Ticker — changing the name, and handing the decision to the community

2026-08-24 Discord 51:35 発話 2 名Two speakers

案 A は rfUSD / srfUSD / RFIG、案 B は USDrf / sUSDrf / RLFG。

現在 案 A 案 B(優勢) USDR sUSDR RFG rfUSD srfUSD RFIG USDrf sUSDrf RLFG 案 B が 66%、案 A が 34%。

10. Q&A

In one line

The name USDR isn't available, so USDR, sUSDR and RFG are all being renamed before mainnet.
Which names they become was handed to a community vote — framed as “the first real big decision of any big changes that are coming to RealFi.”

Key points

  • The tickers change. The reason is that USDR had been used before — “failed projects,” in the words used on the call — and it gets in the way of listing on top exchanges.
  • Two options. Option A is rfUSD / srfUSD / RFIG; option B is USDrf / sUSDrf / RLFG. At the time of the call B leads 66% to 34%. addedThe vote closed on Wednesday 26 August and option B won — 75 votes in total: B on 51 (68%), A on 24 (32%). That outcome is after the call and is not discussed on it.
  • The protocol does not change. “When it comes to RealFi and the protocol, absolutely zero changes. It really is just a name change.”
  • Why now. On exchanges: “we've had some positive talks” — but who with is explicitly off limits. Doing it during testnet keeps it from surfacing later.
  • Why the crews stalled. The Miro workshop produced the themes, but they “pumped the brakes” in order to tie the activity to KPIs (L1s and L2s) first.
  • Crews and districts. A crew forms to solve a problem and disbands; a district is a permanent place where the methods accumulate. Three districts to start.
  • A survey went out in Japan that day. Framed around public goods — protecting your own ADA, and decentralising the network by delegating to single stake pools — explicitly in the context of the SecondFi hack.

1. Why the ticker changes

The name wasn't free — and what held it was a failure in the same category.

USDR was picked, it turns out, for no deeper reason than the company being called RealFi: “that's where the R came from” and it was “the most obvious option to start with.”

Ticker ticker symbol

The short symbol an exchange uses to refer to an asset — the equivalent of a stock's listing code. addedWhat matters here is that it is separate from the token itself. That is exactly why “absolutely zero changes” to the protocol can be true at the same time: only the label moves.

The problem showed up once listing came into view.

We are quite ambitious, we're thinking of the future and we're thinking about what top quality exchanges we can be on, and what came was an issue with actually using USDR because other people had used it previously — failed projects.

Which project is never named on the call. It is left at “failed projects” and the conversation moves on.

An obvious question — does a clashing ticker really block a listing?

addedWhat follows was written to explain something. It was not said on the call.

The scepticism is fair. Duplicate tickers are common in crypto, and exchanges have handled the same symbol twice before. A clash is not automatically disqualifying.

Two things are probably in play at once

One: the symbol itself. In listing review and market-data feeds the symbol travels as the identifier. Where one already has history, charts, price APIs and tax tools get crossed. That is friction on the exchange's side, and friction is a reason to say no.

Two: what the symbol is associated with. This is the harder half. The previous USDR was Real USD, issued by Tangible on Polygon — a stablecoin backed by real estate. On 11 October 2023 it fell from about $1 to roughly $0.51 and was wound down through a redemption process. Reporting at the time attributed it to the liquid part of the treasury (DAI) being drained while nearly 80% of assets sat in property.

RealFi is in precisely that category — a stablecoin backed by real-world assets. To a listing desk the line reads: same symbol, same category, previous one blew up. That is heavier than a plain collision.

What the call actually said

Only that it had been used before by “failed projects.” The Real USD detail above is background added here, not a naming from the call — and what the exchanges themselves said is not disclosed beyond “some positive talks.”

2. The two options, and the vote

There are only two because the research left only two standing.

Why just two choices was addressed directly: “quite a bit of research went into the different options that were available,” and after checking for conflicting projects, these were the two that still made sense.

Now Option A Option B (leading) USDR sUSDR RFG rfUSD srfUSD RFIG USDrf sUSDrf RLFG 66% for B, 34% for A. The vote closes Wednesday 26 August The count is given as 63, and later as “60, 65 — it was 66, so someone's removed their vote”

These spellings come from the written announcement of the vote, not from the call. addedSpoken aloud, RLFG and RLFJ are indistinguishable, so the announcement is followed here. The English transcript keeps what was heard, so it reads differently.

addedThe result, after the call. The vote closed on Wednesday 26 August as planned, and option B won.

So: USDR → USDrf, sUSDR → sUSDrf, RFG → RLFG. 75 votes in total — B on 51 (68%), A on 24 (32%). The call reported 63, then “60, 65,” so turnout kept rising to the deadline. It did not reach the 100 hoped for on the call.

All of this is after the call and none of it is discussed there. When the switch completes is still not stated. The call says only that “we will start the process internally” and that it is “gonna be a lot of work for members of the team.”

What moved the vote was a conversation in the community on the Wednesday it launched.

If you put RF after USD, people that are looking for other stable coins are gonna accidentally find us.

Before that it had been “fairly 50/50.” addedThe argument is about sort order and search: a symbol starting USD lands next to USDC and USDT wherever assets are listed alphabetically. No figure was offered to support the effect.

3. What happens once it closes

The protocol stays put. What changes is the label — and a lot of internal work.

Once the vote closes, “that's it. You've made the decision for us.” Then the internal renaming starts, and it is “gonna be a lot of work for members of the team” because everything currently sits under USDR, sUSDR and RFG.

In essence, when it comes to RealFi and the protocol, absolutely zero changes. It really is just a name change.

Two reasons are given for the timing. Exchanges: “we can't say what exchanges we may be talking to or not talking to”, followed by “we've had some positive talks.” And sequencing: “we're totally fully prepared while we're in testnet”, so it doesn't surface later and cause problems.

Practically: “you won't hear us probably say USDR after Thursday.” addedThe written announcement puts dates on it: the vote closes Wednesday 26 August and the result comes Thursday the 27th.

4. Why the crews hadn't launched

Not a slip. A deliberate stop to settle the interface first.

The second half is the ambassador programme. The Miro workshop run just before the marketing session drew a lot of SPOs and produced “five, six key themes.” Crews were supposed to follow. They haven't.

If there was a criticism of me so far, it's that we haven't launched those crews.

The reason is a question that surfaced while planning for mainnet and beyond: how do you argue that this activity is aligned with business outcomes, and therefore justify more points, more resources, more investment? So “we pumped the brakes briefly.”

The recurring word for what they were trying to settle is the handshake — community and SPOs on one side, the business on the other, both getting value out of it.

The interface between community activity and how the business reads it Community, SPOs Self-organising. Forms crews Rewarded, gets value The handshake Crews and districts plus KPIs (L1s, L2s) Value on both sides The business Allocates resources, points Reads outcomes as numbers The crews waited so that this interface could be settled first “We pumped the brakes briefly so that we could have a look”

“Handshake” is the call's own word, used repeatedly: the point where a self-organising community and a resourcing business meet.

5. L1s and L2s — what gets counted

L1 here is not blockchain layer one. It's a tier of metric.

This section is dense with terms, and the first thing to watch is L1. In a Cardano room that reads as “layer one.” It doesn't mean that here.

L1 / L2 as used on this call

A tier of metric. L1s are business-wide outcomes — described as “system-wide units of account” — and L2s sit under them as the things that drive them. addedNothing to do with blockchain layers, which is exactly what makes it easy to misread here. The speaker himself expands it as “layer one, L1”, introducing it as internal shorthand.

What was listed:

A term-heavy section — open for a plainer explanation

addedWhat follows was written to explain something. It was not said on the call.

How a guardrail differs from a target

The call is explicit that a guardrail is “a range rather than a target.” It is a number you want to stay inside, not one you want to maximise.

Take the over-collateralisation ratio. Too low and the collateral doesn't cover; too high and you are leaving capital idle. So it is bounded, not pushed. The staking ratio behaves the same way — more is not simply better.

An everyday version

Driving: the L1 is “how far to the destination”, the L2 is “current speed”, and a guardrail is the coolant temperature. Temperature isn't something you raise or lower to win — leaving the band is a signal to stop. Progress is read off L1s and L2s; whether anything is breaking is read off the guardrails.

What this call doesn't settle

No targets, and no numbers for the ranges. The metrics are listed and the conversation moves on. On how ambassador activity would move them, the answer is “we've got some ideas.”

The purpose of the exercise is resourcing: to make sure the programme “gets well-resourced”, you have to be able to say how it ultimately drives those numbers.

If I learned nothing else working in IOG and Cardano over the past five, well, seven years, it really is that you want to be able to bring the numbers in that somebody is gonna be able to understand that's on the other side of that handshake.

6. Crews and districts

The thing that dissolves and the thing that stays. Two tiers, for the sake of scale.

The programme's skeleton is two tiers, both the call's own words.

Crew / district the call's own words

A crew is a social group that forms to solve a problem as part of a campaign, and disbands once it's solved. A district is a permanent location where the knowledge and practices are captured — “like a methods bank, like a playbook.” addedSo crews are people, districts are places: the second tier exists so that what was learned survives the people rotating through.

What dissolves / what stays Crew Forms around a problem Disbands once it's solved Several can run at once District A permanent location Methods and playbooks build up Three of them to start Examples — a harbor (regional hubs), a stage (engagement), a bazaar (GTM and partners) a forge (product and innovation), a dark forest (rooms RealFi can't reach)

The names themselves are meant to come from the community — “because it's a cultural thing.” The five above were offered as examples.

The reason for two tiers is scale: not one crew in charge of, say, events, but the capacity for multiple crews to form around problems — “structure that will scale as we go cross-chain.”

And the reason for place-names at all: inside any team there is a language and a culture that only works inside it, and you can't scale that internal knowledge the same way. So you use artifacts to “build this world up in somebody's mind that they can find their way around.”

From the marketing side came the Simon Cowell comparison — spotting qualities in people who don't work as individuals and combining them. addedThe host reframes it immediately as “scouting for talent and working out where that talent can be best deployed”, and the reply insists the other way round: “it's for you to show us what the best is.”

7. The dark forest, and where SPOs fit

The more of the internet is bots, the more a room full of people is worth. That's where SPOs come in.

The dark forest district turns into the most fully argued passage of the call. It is offered as a metaphor, not as a judgement.

Dark forest / cozy web the call's own words

A dark forest is a place you can't see into from outside — here, communities that RealFi's own channels can't reach and that only someone comfortable in those rooms could enter. The cozy web is where people go once they leave the open internet: private channels and smaller spaces. addedNeither is used pejoratively on the call. The observation is that people move towards places where you can tell who wrote something.

The chain as it was laid out Mostly bots 50–80% of the web ~90% on-chain Into the cozy web Private channels and smaller rooms Where SPOs count Influential on-chain and online alike So an SPO can stand as “proof of human,” the argument goes Phrased as a degree of probability; the test itself is not described

The sources were named too: Cloudflare for the 50–80% of web activity, Messari and DeFiLlama for the ~90% on-chain.

Proof of human the call's own words

Because SPOs are influential on-chain and online, the argument runs, “you're able to see to a far greater degree of probability that this is like proof of human” — real, authentic activity. addedNote the framing: it is a degree of probability, and no test is described. The same question from 24 July (item 21 in shared/open-questions.md) is still not answered at the mechanism level.

The mirror image is stated as clearly: what they don't want is “gamified farming” — grinding tasks for points.

It's not vanity metrics that we want. We want authentic activity.

The anti-Sybil and anti-farming methods “are effective,” per the call. addedA Sybil attack is one person posing as many to collect a reward repeatedly. On 14 August the mechanism was withheld deliberately: publishing it would make farming easier.

8. The survey in Japan

Out that day. Built around public goods, and explicitly timed to the SecondFi hack.

Late in the call, an update on Japan, “kept quite broad.” The premise first:

If you've been at all involved in governance, something like 4 to 5 billion ADA has moved around — and that's in Japan, over the past 12 months.

addedWhat that figure counts is not stated. It is offered in a governance context, but whether it means re-delegation, DRep delegation or transfers is not said, and no source is given.

The survey went out that day, to Japanese SPOs and KOLs. addedKOL is “key opinion leader” — someone with reach in a particular community. The questions are about public goods, and this is “within the context of the SecondFi hack, and so therefore it's timely.”

Three public goods are named:

Beyond those, the survey asks how much people care about the long-term health of Cardano, and what would help them stay.

The purpose is material. The aim is a set of shareables and presentation materials SPOs can walk their delegators through — “a kind of train the trainer or educate the educator model”, where “rather than us wanting to put words in anybody's mouths” the point is to help build the arguments that land.

And it is explicitly not only about Japan: “this is a spoiler 'cause I think it could be useful for the Western SPOs” — with “Western” glossed on the spot as “everywhere that isn't Asia.”

addedThis section bears directly on Japanese SPOs, but the survey questions themselves, the deadline, and how the results will be published are all unstated. What was given is the framing and the purpose.

9. The whole picture

The two halves look unrelated. They make the same point.

The name wasn't free A failed project held it before Three tickers change Protocol untouched. Done during testnet The community decides “The first real big decision” The ambassador programme Crews, districts, and KPIs to win resources What runs through both: the decision isn't ours to make

The ticker goes to a vote and the district names go to the community. Neither was originally planned that way — both became so along the way.

The ticker vote, it is admitted, “originally wasn't meant to be a community decision” — it became one after “a bit of a brainwave” about keeping people engaged. Naming the districts follows the same logic, “because it's a cultural thing.”

The host's phrase for it is governance being handed over: “if we're building the muscle now where the community can make the decisions.”

10. Q&A

Four from chat, one of them proposing a different ticker.

Participant AAbout exchange rates during testnet.

“While we're in testnet nothing's actually live, so we don't have actual exchange rates for it yet.” The question is acknowledged rather than answered: “that's something that when we can, we can talk about, but we're just not there yet as a project.”

From chatWas USDA considered as a ticker?

“We didn't look into USDA.” “I get why you're gonna do it for alphabetical reasons”, but “I think CEXes are probably aware of that, so it probably isn't one” — with the caveat “I'd have to actually look in if it was.” addedUSDA is already a stablecoin ticker on Cardano itself — issued by Anzens, launched with EMURGO. So that option would collide on the same chain. This was not established on the call.

Participant FWould crews have scheduled meetings?

A crew needs “at least two or three founding members,” and “probably they're gonna be SPOs if there's the appetite for it.” After that, “it'd be down to that group of people to decide what kind of cadence that had.” Formation gets a mandate, kept “simple” enough to navigate.

Participant AWill RealFi be at Token 2049?

Yes. The application is in for a Cardano Foundation booth, and “think that closes tomorrow.” If it lands, “hopefully in a week they can make our lives 100 times easier.”

11. Left open

The names get settled. Several of the contents don't.

WithheldWhich exchanges are being talked to.

Stated flatly: “we can't say what exchanges we may be talking to or not talking to.” All that follows is “we've had some positive talks.” No counterparty, no timing.

This week and nextRoles, status and points in the ambassador programme.

Listed as what people are asking — “what roles or status or points or how these things work” — and answered with “that's what I'm gonna be focusing on this week and next.” The proposal isn't finished.

Listed onlyTargets for the L1s and L2s, and the guardrail ranges.

The metrics are named; no targets and no ranges are given. On how ambassador activity would move them: “we've got some ideas.”

Volume onlyWhat the rename does to existing integrations.

“Everything right now is under USDR, sUSDR, and RFG” and “we'll have to go through a lot of that” — but how testnet balances, documentation and third-party displays get switched over is not covered.

Trailed only“Big announcements in the works.”

“There are big announcements in the works that we can't talk about” — no contents and no timing. It comes in the middle of a request to invite people into the community.
