RealFi Office Hours

Three weeks into testnet: roughly one in seven active Cardano wallets has touched RealFi,
and pools in the SPO support programme clearly out-gained pools outside it.
WHAT THE CALL COVERED
Testnet launched 6 July, the SPO programme 22 July. These figures span both milestones.
Both on-chain and off-chain data were used. It was stated explicitly that no crews have been formed and no campaign work has been applied yet — these are pre-campaign numbers.
Four numbers were offered as the take-home.
About 2,600 wallets in the last epoch, against roughly 20,000 Cardano wallets that were active at all.
added2,600 ÷ 20,000 is closer to 13%. The call used “14%” and “one in seven”, which appear to be spoken approximations.
The speaker attached his own caveat: testnet and mainnet are different populations, so this is not a strict comparison. “There may be some people active on testnet who were never active on mainnet.” It was offered as a sense of scale, not a precise ratio.
addedWhat the 20,000 actually counts. It is not the total number of wallets on Cardano. It is an approximate count of wallets that were active within a period. So what the comparison says is:
Around 2,600 wallets moved on RealFi’s testnet recently. Set against the roughly 20,000 wallets that are normally active on Cardano, that is about a seventh of them.
It is also not a like-for-like comparison. The call flags the different populations, and beyond that the two figures were not presented as sharing a measurement window or a definition of “active”. Read it as an indication of scale, not a precise ratio.
What matched are stake credentials — not people, and not the real overlap.
Around 340 matches were made between testnet and mainnet using cryptographic keys, and those hold 2.3 million ADA on mainnet.
The match is made on a shared stake credential. Wallets that don't share one can't be connected mechanically, even when the same person holds both. The real overlap is therefore larger than this.
addedWritten here to explain the mechanism.
A Cardano address carries two separate things: the credential used to move funds (the payment credential) and the one used for delegation (the stake credential).
Change network and the displayed string changes too — mainnet reads stake1…, Preprod reads stake_test1…. But two different strings can still carry the same stake credential. Compare them with the network portion set aside and activity on both networks can be linked mechanically.
Wallets like Lace let you keep the same wallet account and just switch the network to Preprod. To the user it feels like “the testnet version of my wallet”, and they are unlikely to be thinking about the stake credential being shared.
If someone generated a separate seed phrase for testnet — or used a different account from the same seed — the stake credential differs, and a heavy mainnet user still won't be linked.
So this is not only about whether someone deliberately separated seeds. Ordinary differences in how a wallet was set up or operated will also break the match.
What matches are stake credentials, not people. One person may hold several; conversely an exchange or shared wallet can consolidate many people behind one.
The accurate reading of ~340 is the number of stake credentials mechanically linked across the two networks. The real overlap in users may well be higher.
On the method. The call described it as “mapped using cryptographic keys” and referred to stake keys. The fuller methodology, including what exactly was being counted, is due to be shared later (section 11).
On the inconsistency. The count is given three ways during the call — 339, then 359, then 340 — read aloud from slides. This page uses “around 340”.
84% of pools in the programme grew delegation, against 17% of comparable pools outside it.
The comparison was built by matching SPOs in the programme against SPOs of comparable size that were not, over a two-week window.
On the leaderboard, the top pool attracted 840k ADA in new delegation. A caveat was added: to avoid biasing towards pools that were already large, it is worth reading the table by percentage of stake at the start of the epoch, not only by absolute new ADA.
Two limits on the sample. Only SPOs listed on the community website are included — those who attended the workshop and registered. And these are numbers from before any crews were formed or any campaign work applied. “There's a lot more growth here that we can potentially do.”
On what the programme is: it gives SPOs an opportunity to differentiate and market their pools — not a guarantee. “I got at least one DM where someone was upset with me”, which suggests expectations had drifted.
The correlation is clear; causation is not. The person presenting said so himself.
What stood out on this call is that the person presenting the numbers applied the brakes himself.
Right after saying that mainnet TVL cannot be forecast, the host listed a few things in a “there are still moves available” spirit — each in a single clause, with no elaboration before the conversation moved on.
He closed with “there's definitely pieces on the board. But as you say, it's not certain.”
addedThe call only named it, so the background is filled in here.
A request to withdraw 120 million ADA from the Cardano treasury (about $19.2M at the price assumed in the proposal) and spend it over 12 months growing DeFi liquidity and TVL on Cardano. It is run by AlphaGrowth, a firm specialising in DeFi growth operations, tokenomics and business development.
The stated goal is a net increase of over $200M in qualifying TVL.
On-chain voting is under way. Cardano treasury withdrawals need a two-thirds (67%) DRep majority, and this one has not passed.
It also depends on raising the Net Change Limit — the total the treasury may release in a period — from 350 million ADA to 500 million. A staged safeguard applies: if the third phase is not approved, roughly 90 million ADA never leaves the treasury.
Voting is still open, so this moves. What is written here is the position on the date above.
PRIME's aim — deeper liquidity in DEXs and lending markets — is the same thing RealFi described wanting in sections 6 and 7. The USDR flywheel depends on secondary market depth, so more liquidity across the ecosystem works in its favour. That overlap is why the name came up in a TVL discussion.
But it is a proposal that has not passed, which is what the host's follow-up — “there's definitely pieces on the board, but it's not certain” — refers to.
Keeping USDR redeemable near $1 at any time, by managing liquidity at three levels.
addedEverything below was written to explain the section. None of it was said on the call.
How quickly something can be turned back into cash when it is needed.
If you hold $1M of assets but the mix is “sells today”, “repays in a few days” and “locked up for months”, you cannot treat all of it as the same $1M. This section is about how that difference is managed.
Assets are sorted by how long they take to turn into cash, and the mix is adjusted so that withdrawals can be met: plenty of the fast stuff, not too much of the locked-up stuff.
“Calibrating time to cash against TVL” means holding enough readily available assets to match the amount of USDR actually deposited.
Each asset differs in when it repays, whether it can be sold early, and whether it is collateralised. This session didn't go into it, but the asset classes are named elsewhere (section 10) — tokenised money market funds, floating rate corporate bonds, investment grade CLO ETFs, direct private credit deals.
If the pool is thin, swapping USDR moves the price and you can no longer sell 1 USDR for about $1 (slippage). So the design covers which DEXs hold pools, which pairs, and how much sits in them.
“Enough depth that traders aren't spread thin” means enough liquidity that you don't lose meaningfully to the price gap when you trade.
A mechanism for pulling USDR back towards $1 when it drifts. In the general pattern, a dip makes it profitable to buy cheap and redeem at par, buying pressure appears, and the price recovers. How RealFi's specifically works was not described on this call.
“Running continuously” means it acts on pre-set rules rather than someone deciding case by case.
The hardest line in the section. It means the allocation is not set by betting that rates will rise or that selling will pick up.
Instead it works off currently known figures — how much converts to cash within 7 days, how much repays within 30, what can be exited early, what TVL is now, what volume the DEX pools are doing — and shifts the mix mechanically from those.
Think of a restaurant. Withdrawals of USDR are customer orders.
And crucially, you don't over-prep on a hunch that today will be busy. You look at what is in the fridge, when deliveries land, and how many orders that lets you serve.
Sort the assets backing USDR by how quickly they convert to cash, keep enough liquidity on DEXs that USDR trades and redeems near $1, and drive that calibration from known data — maturities and redemption terms — rather than from a forecast.
1. The aggregate portfolio calibration against TVL
Asset liquidity is constantly calibrated against TVL. Time to cash is treated as a property of every position rather than an afterthought, because the underlyings have different horizons.
2. The underlying instruments deferred
Left for the investment team's own session — “I'd prefer if the investment team focuses on that.”
3. Secondary market liquidity on-chain, in the DEXs
Which pool types hold USDR, which venues it trades on, and pool sizing modelled against the specific AMMs involved. The aim is enough depth that people trading it aren't spread thin.
The peg stability module was described as “a framework that runs continuously, designed to maintain the USDR at peg”.
The most distinctive claim was that “none of that calibrational thinking depends on predicting anything”. A version could be built that rests on being right about spreads, sentiment or rates — instead, the approach is to work off what is known and flex parameters around it: settlement windows, term lengths, redemption terms.
addedWhat this call doesn't tell us. On the peg stability module we get as far as “a framework that runs continuously, designed to maintain the USDR at peg”. What it actually holds, who funds it, and on what terms redemption works were not covered — and that is the part that determines how safe the peg really is. Logged as something to ask about in a later session.
Depth enables looping, looping drives TVL, and that draws more depth.
This came out of a request to explain the growth cycle in plain terms. From studying what drives growth for other stablecoins, the learning they came back to again and again was that DeFi integrations matter most.
The host added a request: visuals from the community explaining strategies would be valuable, because “it can cross borders, it can cross languages”.
addedWhat a “flywheel” is. A heavy wheel that stores momentum. In business usage it means a loop where each step strengthens the next, so every turn adds momentum — hard to get moving at first, then largely self-sustaining.
What “DeFi integrations” actually means here. Not a vague “DeFi gets attached to it”, but USDR / sUSDR becoming usable inside other protocols. Looping specifically needs two things:
Only with both does the loop turn: borrow USDR against sUSDR → stake it into more sUSDR → post that as collateral again. Remove either piece and the loop stops. “More places it plugs into” means more venues where that loop can run.
addedThis is not about liquidity from EVM. The “DeFi integrations” discussed here are protocols connecting to each other on Cardano. Drawing capital in from other chains was the bridge topic at the previous engineering session — EVM, bridges and cross-chain are not mentioned once in this call.
The two are complementary: the bridge widens the way capital gets in, and DeFi integrations create things for that capital to do. But that connection was not drawn during this call.
On-chain is auditable. The hard part is showing what happens off-chain.
Transparency was framed as important to the success and growth of the stablecoin. The work splits in two.
For an ordinary user the output is information in the app refreshed daily or in real time — the portfolio, platform activity, where things stand. The goal is that “at least the basic information is always up to date and available to anyone who wants to see it”.
Related: getting listed on DefiLlama, Dune and similar analytics platforms is on the data engineering to-do list. “The challenge isn't in pushing the data to these places, the challenge is in having the data and transforming it” — which is the same point as the section above.
RealFi does not lend to individuals. It extends credit to local fintechs, who lend onward.
The sharpest exchange of the call came from a participant who came up to the stage over audio.
The question: DeFi requires over-collateralisation, but people borrow precisely because they don't have that capital. “Here in Africa, if I want $1,000 of loan in DeFi, I have to provide 2,000. But me coming to get a loan is because I don't have that capital. Coming from the informal market, there is no credit line attached to my identity. Is there any framework around that?”
The questioner restated it himself — “instead of building that wheel, you just need to integrate to a fintech product; they already do that in the demographic they operate in” — and the answer was “correct”.
It was added that this “is not to say that an on-chain kind of credit isn't part of it”. Funding local institutions is simply the most direct and easiest route available right now.
Of the five questions left open at the engineering session, two moved.
Open since last time → confirmedDo the testnet wallet and the mainnet wallet need to be linked, and will there be an official way to do it?
The engineering session said a website for linking would be provided. This time it was confirmed that “the engineering team just demoed it today — there will definitely be a way to do it”, though the specifics still cannot be described.
This question has now been asked twice in a row. It will likely keep coming until an official guide exists.
Open since last time → partly answeredHow many fintechs, and what exactly is in the private credit?
The asset mix was named — tokenised money market funds, floating rate corporate bonds, potentially investment grade CLO ETFs, and direct private credit deals or institutional private credit funds. “None of it relies on any crypto-native allocation.”
Section 9 also clarified how the credit actually flows. The number of fintechs and their geographic spread remain unanswered.
The remaining three — the governance framework, KYC / AML, and marketing-driven APY — were not touched. The mainnet launch date likewise remains unannounced.
Questions from the chat and from the floor.
Participant DHow many people work on RealFi in total, and when did it start?
The headcount was not given. On timing: “two and a half years ago is when we started hiring the engineering team, the data team, the investment team — when it moved from a strategic phase to really getting serious about building”, and “about a year ago is when we really started pushing harder on smart contracts and the Web3 side”. The founder had been thinking about the problem for years before that.
Participant FAre there plans to link to the community page from the main RealFi site or app?
The main site currently targets institutional players. In the future, but not right now — “the best way to move forward was to get a community hub built rather than trying to get into discussions around legal and audiences.”
Participant AWhat exactly is the methodology behind these figures?
“It got pretty complex. I'll be able to share details at a future date — I can't remember them off the top of my head.” The host also committed to following up on the methodology.
Participant EA question about a combination with another project.
“Not from my side.” addedThe audio is unclear on the project name, so it is not reproduced here.
What they want back: feedback, and opinions on which numbers to track.
The headline figure itself came from the community: a participant originally raised that around 16% of Cardano wallets appeared to be active with RealFi, which became the basis for this analysis. A community observation turned directly into the official data topic.
The rotation ahead is partnerships → leadership → the investment team.
